Mauritius weather overview

The island has two main seasons. Summer runs from November to April and brings hot, humid weather with temperatures around 27–30°C. This is also the wettest period, with short tropical showers common in the afternoon. Winter, from May to October, is cooler and drier, with daytime temperatures around 22–25°C. Many travellers consider winter the most comfortable time to visit because humidity is lower and rain is less frequent.

Best time for beaches, swimming and snorkelling

October to December is widely considered the best period for beach lovers. The sea is warm and calm, the skies are clear and the island is greener after the winter months. January and February are popular with families travelling during school holidays, but these months can be wetter and more humid. The east coast, including Belle Mare and Palmar, tends to be windier year-round than the west coast.

Best time for diving and water sports

Visibility for scuba diving is excellent from November to May, when the water is clearest and marine life is most active. Kitesurfers and windsurfers prefer the windier months of June to September, especially in Le Morne, Bel Ombre and the south-west. Big-game fishing is good year-round but peaks from October to April.

Whale and dolphin watching

Sperm whales can be seen off the south-west coast year-round, while humpback whales migrate past Mauritius from June to October. Dolphins are spotted almost daily on the west coast near Black River and Tamarin, with morning boat trips offering the best chances.

Cyclone season

Cyclones are possible between January and March, with February being the highest-risk month. Most cyclones pass without causing major disruption, but they can bring heavy rain, strong winds and flight delays.
