Mauritius Airport Bus Guide: Routes, Fares & Luggage

Public buses are the cheapest way to travel in Mauritius, but they are rarely the best option from the airport to a hotel. This guide explains how buses work, where they go, what they cost, and when a pre-booked private transfer is the smarter choice.

How airport buses work

SSR / MRU airport has a public bus stop outside the terminal. Buses connect to nearby Mahebourg and Blue Bay, and some routes continue toward Port Louis or other towns. Services are frequent by Mauritian standards but not timed to flight arrivals. After a long flight, waiting in the heat with luggage can be uncomfortable.

Where buses go

Buses from the airport mainly serve local towns. Reaching resort areas such as Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, Belle Mare or Le Morne by bus requires multiple changes and long journey times. There is no direct resort shuttle network.

Fares and luggage

Bus fares are very low, usually well under €2 for short journeys. However, luggage space is limited and large suitcases may not be allowed during busy periods. Buses are not designed for travellers with multiple bags, strollers, golf clubs or surfboards.

When buses are okay

A bus can work if you are staying in Mahebourg or Blue Bay, you have only a small backpack, you arrive during daylight hours and you are comfortable finding your stop. For everywhere else, a different transport option is usually better.

When to book a private transfer instead

For resort areas, families, late-night arrivals, groups, or anyone with luggage, a pre-booked private transfer is faster, safer and far more comfortable. You get a fixed price, a driver waiting inside the terminal and direct door-to-door service.
